Smart chess, a device designed for learning chess, playing against the computer or other players online via a physical board. It uses “Hall effect” sensors to recognize pieces and LED lights to display allowed and played moves. The special feature of the device is the combination of the classic feeling of playing on a board with the possibilities of digital connectivity. The board is 3D printed, modular and easy to assemble, and the idea is that users assemble the device themselves and through that process additionally learn about technology and chess. We use 3D printed pieces with magnets for stability and precise position reading. For online play, the Lichess API is integrated, which allows connecting with millions of players around the world. The intention is to bring chess closer to beginners through interactive learning, but also to provide an advanced, modern experience for players of all levels – while preserving the feeling of physical play on the board.
