HERMES (Hydrogen Repowering Management System)

In line with the European goals of the green transition, ALTPRO launched the HERMES (Hydrogen Repowering Management System) project – a development in the field of hydrogen technology and sustainable energy solutions for railways. HERMES is a stand-alone system for the production of electricity using hydrogen fuel cells, designed for easy integration into the existing vehicle fleet to enable emission-free traction and the necessary electrification. Instead of relying on diesel locomotives or expensive electrification infrastructure, HERMES enables electric traction independent of existing infrastructure. This solution solves a major challenge in the rail industry: how to decarbonize non-electrified lines or those using other energy systems. With HERMES, trains can run quieter, cleaner and more efficiently, without the need for significant infrastructure upgrades. HERMES is used as a stand-alone product and can also serve as a technological platform for other applications related to hydrogen in railways and outside the railways. The system can be used in various industrial applications as a high-power voltage source and with hydrogen as a fuel, thus contributing to the decarbonization process and the transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
