The FlexiSOS project is an assistive communication device developed to enhance the safety, independence, and quality of life of individuals with communication, motor, or sensory impairments. The project was conceived in response to a specific challenge: in emergency situations, users often cannot operate smartphones, apps, or complex digital interfaces, while existing solutions frequently fail to provide confirmation that help has actually been summoned or information regarding the user’s location. FlexiSOS utilizes LTE communication independent of Wi-Fi infrastructure and enables the transmission of pre-defined messages with a single press of a physical button. A key feature of the system is integrated GPS geolocation; upon sending a message, the device attempts to retrieve the user’s current location and transmit it to a caregiver alongside the distress signal.

The system includes:

  • LTE SMS communication
  • GPS geolocation
  • SOS escalation logic with message repetition
  • Cloud-based confirmation and remote alarm cancellation
  • An accessible physical interface with Braille markings

The project integrates the following fields:

  • Embedded systems
  • IoT technologies
  • Assistive technologies
  • Accessible design
  • Mobile communications

FlexiSOS is more than just a technical device for sending messages; it is a system that transforms communication into verified, location-aware information, thereby enhancing user safety and reducing caregiver anxiety.
