The aim of this project is to design, build, and test a prototype of a smart system that automatically recognizes and sorts various types of waste into appropriate containers. The system uses a camera and sensors to collect data about an object; a microcomputer or microcontroller then processes this information to determine the waste category. Once recognized, servo motors are activated to direct the waste into the corresponding container.
The project integrates the fields of electronics, robotics, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. Waste recognition can be based on image analysis using a camera and machine learning models, or on a combination of sensors detecting color, metal content, and other material characteristics. By processing the collected data, the system distinguishes between materials such as plastic, paper, and metal, and automatically executes the sorting process.
The mechanical component of the device consists of a transport system and a waste-directing mechanism. Servo motors control the moving parts that divert the object into the appropriate container. The device is constructed from lightweight yet durable materials to ensure ease of assembly, operational reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
The electronic component of the system comprises a camera, sensors, a microcontroller or microcomputer, servo motors, control circuitry, and a power supply. The software component is developed using computer vision and artificial intelligence algorithms that enable the recognition of different waste types and the control of the device’s mechanical parts.
During development, tests are conducted to evaluate material recognition accuracy, data processing speed, and sorting reliability. Special attention is paid to algorithm optimization to ensure the system operates quickly and accurately under varying lighting conditions and object positions.
The expected outcome of the project is a functional prototype of a smart system capable of automatically sorting waste without human intervention. Such a device can contribute to more efficient recycling, a reduction in improperly disposed waste, and increased awareness regarding the importance of environmental protection. The system also serves as an example of applying robotics and artificial intelligence to address everyday environmental issues and can act as a foundation for developing larger automated waste management systems.
