The sonar distance detector is made up of an ultrasound sensor controlled using an Arduino microcontroller. The microcontroller activates the ultrasound sensor that sends out 8 impulses of 40 kHz and awaits their reflection. Once the sensor detects the reflected impulse, it sends the data back to the microcontroller. The time between the emission and receive of the impulse is proportionate to the distance of the object from the sensor. This sonar was implemented on a vessel to detect the distance to the shoreline.
