This innovative new concept shown here significantly improves existing methods for near-surface LILW repository site and protective materials selection. The innovation shown here is based on the application of drones for obtaining aerial photos and photo analysis software for the purpose of identifying geological materials and anomalies in them for preliminary choice of locations as well as materials for the protective layers. This approach and method have not been used before, and they significantly facilitate and speed up the work and help in the identification of potentially problematic zones.
